Mr. Mon-Pin didn’t think he or his wife had it in them to raise and lower their exterior roller shades by hand every day anymore. They decided to add motorization to their house’s heavier shades to save themselves some joint pain and effort. They wanted to keep the shades themselves, but remount them on automated roller systems.
Step one was to remove the old fashioned, cord-drawn rollers from outside the window frames and detach the fabric sheets. This required cutting the shades free from where they looped around the spool, but we made neat, careful cuts and avoided damage. We sewed the sheets back together around a set of Lutron remote controlled roller mounts and patched those into the house’s power system. The new motorized rollers made a good fit for the exterior window frames, and once we programmed the remote they were fully functional.
